I know a lot of small dogs can bark a lot which I would like to avoid, but a large dog is impractical for my one bedroom flat. This will be my first dog on my own as well. Any information would be appreciated.

I think a great dog would be a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are small and practical for apartment living, but are not “yappy” and are great with children (from my experience) not to mention that they are cute! Do some research on this breed and look for ones you can rescue, but that is the breed i would recommend.
heres a pic:
Hmmm. That’s hard to say. Sad to say, but most small breeds are a bit on the yappy side.
I have a Miniature Pinscher and know several people who have them in apartments. I’ve heard their excellent apartment dogs, which I can understand completely. Some of them bark a bit, but other than that, they sound like the breed for you! They’re literally like a big dog in a small body.
Good luck in your search!
Yorkshire terrier!!!! they are adorable and are the nicest dogs.
I’m going through the same thing. I want to find me a small dog that will be good for a small 1 bedroom apartment. I have one particular dog in mind though, which is a maltese. They’re hypoallergenic, non-shedding, and cuddly!! But i dont know about for a guy. You might want a terrier or something like that. Look up toy breeds on yahoo search or google and look up the different types. I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll be interested in.
By the way, if you plan on searching for a puppy/dog through the internet, beware of scammers. Most come from Africa, Cameroon and other places outside of the country as well as in the U.S. They’ll ask for the money first and then something will go wrong and you’ll end up paying again then waiting and waiting for a dog that doesnt’ exist. Also, best way to buy through the internet is buying in your state and asking them to send you a picture with a certain sayin on a sign in front of them or something like that. Also, ask for a phone number so you can speak with them personally.
I have a calm-at-times black lab (pretty huge) at my apartment and nobody has complained about him! I prefer large breed dogs, so i would say if ur like me, u should get an old dog… but if u really dont have space, u should get a medium sized dog, like a beagle or a cocker spaniel(but c.spaniels are really hyper.) go to petfinder.com or animalplanet.com…. on animalplanet.com, it says what kind of dog u should get!!! I hope I helped!!
Well any dog can be broken of barking… it just depends on how YOU train them. Get a book about dogs (I recommend Cesar Milan book) and don’t make any rash decisions about what type of dog to get. There is a quiz on dogbreedinfo.com that you can take and it will tell you which type of dog is best for you. But again, the dog will always act like a dog, so it is your responsibility if it misbehaves or doesn’t do what you want it to do.
Good Luck!
It might not be allowed where you live, but look into a pit bull.
My ex brought her home. Last kind of dog i would’ve wanted, especially around kids. I lived in an apartment also.
I tell people she is a Fox hound mix (She is black and white). She is only 60 pounds. She is a medium sized dog. Fox hound size.
Pitbulls are very friendly and big babies. She has to sleep with us or on a doggie bed or couch.
They don’t bark much at all. Only if you teach them.
It is only when you teach them to be mean and/or fight that things could go wrong.
My dog stayed in a crate for her first 3 yrs when I would go to work. She didn’t mind.
She is the best dog I ever had. Big kisser.
I trust her more than the Pure bred German Shepards I have owned.
Just remember it is a long commitment.
You will also feel secure with a pitbull. My dog would probably let in burglars, but some people are scared of them just because of their reputation. I know I am a bit scared of pitbulls i don’t know.
Good Luck.
Get whatever breed fits your personality and lifestyle. Yes small dogs, especially terriers do tend to be barky BUT you are supposed to be the pack leader and set rules. If you are willing to spend the time to train your small dog, give it the exercise it needs, and IF you treat it like an intelligent dog instead of a spoiled baby then you will not end up with a yappy, spoiled brat.
A Maltese or Italian Greyhound might work as might a Cavalier or several other breeds. go to the K9 Country website and take their breed selection quiz. If you answer all the questions honestly, you should come up with a list of possible breeds that would work. It’s not perfect and does not have some of the newer breeds on it but it would give a good starting point.
hi there, please be aware that if you live in an apartment with a dog you have to be prepared to get dressed sometimes in the middle of the night to take your dog out for it’s toileting needs!! and of course plenty of walks at other times, if you don’t mind that then choose a few breeds that you like, do some research on them. find a reputable breeder( ask a local vet for advice) always ask to see both parents, (if that’s possible) find out if the pups have been tested(and cleared) of any known hereditary faults ,if they are good breeders they will have authentic written proof. a responsible breeder will ask YOU all sorts of questions to see if you are suitable for the dog! you may also consider a rescue dog, in a lot of cases the dogs are already house trained(might just need a refresher course in a new home)well adjusted, balanced dogs in animal rescue through no fault of their own(death of an owner, marriage breakup e.t.c.)they need a second chance! a good rescue will make sure you are matched up with the right dog regardless of size! (within reason) anyway i hope i have helped you. Be a responsible owner and have fun with your new furry friend. bye for now catherine
